Sunderland Til I Die: Former manager Simon Grayson unhappy about how he was portrayed in Netflix documentary
Simon Grayson has told talkSPORT he is unhappy about the way he was portrayed in Netflix documentary series Sunderland Til I Die.The eight-part fly on the wall series may be grim viewing for Black Cats fans, but it has earned rave reviews for the way it followed the teams 2017/18 season which ended in relegation to League One.For Grayson, however, the hit show has put an unwanted spotlight on his short and ill-fated reign in charge at the Stadium of Light. The show was expected to document the Black Cats promotion challenge, but ultimately documented their drop to the third tier of English football.Grayson was tasked with lifting Sunderland back to Premier League when he was appointed in June 2017 as a replacement for David Moyes who resigned following the clubs relegation to the Championship. However, he only last four months in the job and was sacked in October with the Black Cats second from bottom in the table, being replaced by Chris Coleman – who could not save the club from relegation.Chris Coleman only last five months in charge of Sunderland leaving the club in April 2018 after their relegation to League One2

Asked if he is comfortable about how hes portrayed in the Netflix series, Grayson told talkSPORT’s Matchday Live: Not really. It [the documentary deal] was in place when I first went to Sunderland, so I didnt have any opportunity to say no.What I said to the people who were doing it was they couldnt have access to the dressing room and other certain areas, but we would try and help them along the way. What I was disappointing with was that they didnt portray myself and my staff how we are. There were only a couple of clips here are there of us in a classroom which was done five hours before a pre-season match – we didnt really get the air time to show our personality. When it went onto Chris, you saw a different side to him to be fair. The series follows a tough season for Black Cats fans – but they have remained fiercely loyal to their club in League One football this season2

Its very well done documentary and its getting rave publicity, but ultimately from my perspective Im a little bit disappointed how we were portrayed. We certainly did some good work at Sunderland behind the scenes to get people going to work with a smile on their face.Ultimately the results didnt go our way, but we werent portrayed in that manner, really.Listen to more of Simon Grayson on talkSPORT above
