Arsenal look set to appoint famed talent-spotter Monchi as their new technical director – and what a coup it would be for the north London club.The Spaniard, who has now left his post at Roma, made his name as one of the best talent-spotters in the game following his 17-year stint with LaLiga side Sevilla.

Monchi signed the Colombian striker from Club Brugge in 2013 for a fee of 5.25million.The forward immediately hit the ground running in LaLiga, scoring 21 goals in his first season for Los Hispalenses.After another prolific season in LaLiga where he scored 28 goals – Bacca was then sold to Milan for a fee of 22.5million.

Monchi himself has stated this was his best ever signing and not even he could have imagined his signing would become one of the finest defenders in the modern game.Alves was signed for just 413k from Bahia in 2003 and spent five years with Sevilla before transferring to Barcelona for 27million in 2008.He made his spot on the right-flank his own in Catalonia and has since gone on to play for Juventus and now Paris Saint-Germain.

Monchi spotted the Croat’s contract was winding down at Schalke and he was then signed at Sevilla for the cut-price fee of 1.8million.He captained the side to Europa League glory in 2014 before leaving for Barcelona that summer.There is now speculation that he could leave Camp Nou, with Chelsea interested and a 44million asking fee set by Barca chiefs.

The Dane was signed for free from Schalke in 2007 after the World Cup and played brilliantly in his two years at Sevilla.The defensive midfielder was scooped up by Juventus in 2008 and signed for 7.3million and later went on to have a unsuccessful stint at Liverpool.

Another talented Brazilian player that Monchi signed on the cheap was Adriano.The full-back, although not as explosive as Alves on the other flank, solidified his spot on the left side of Sevilla’s defence for six years after his 1.8million move.He was another player to make his way to Barcelona – moving to Catalonia in 2010 for 7.13million.Grzegorz Krychowiak
